The BLOODHOUND SSC Supporters Club - "The 1K Club"

Welcome to the Supporters Club section of the BLOODHOUND website.

The Supporters Club is known as the 1K Club. Why? Because 1K is the abbreviation for 1,000 (as in 1km = 1,000 metres, 1kg = 1,000 grams etc), and 1,000 mph is the target for BLOODHOUND SSC's Land Speed Record!

I hope you will join the 1K club - as a member you can really be a part of the engineering adventure.

As well as your 1K Club Welcome Pack and other BLOODHOUND goodies, as a 1K Club member you will also benefit from unprecedented access to the whole team which will help you to really live the excitement of making history. I was a member of the ThrustSSC Mach 1 club and from the day I joined I felt that I was making a real contribution, had a huge amount of pride in the project and the achievements and even felt that in a small way I was actually part of the team.

It is my job to make sure that all 1K Club members feel the same level of excitement and involvement.

The 1K Club is open and relevant to all ages. As an adult Mach 1 Club member I shared all the excitement with my young son. It gave us a reason to talk, a shared interest and brought us closer together. He also wrote school projects about ThrustSSC and I became extremely knowledgeable about all the different aspects of building a Land Speed Record-breaking car. By reading the pages in the forthcoming introductory newsletter you will start to understand the huge obstacles that must be overcome from aerodynamics, jet power and wheel design to instrumentation, not to mention the difficulties in finding somewhere in the world to run such a fantastic car.

Unlike any other club, as members of the Mach 1 Club my son, who is now 19, and I had direct access to the project members who treated us like one of the team. Can you image the engineers in Formula 1 allowing a child to sit in the car and then for the driver to sign a personalised picture! Whilst I cannot guarantee a sit in the car I can guarantee unrivalled access to the whole team and a share in the whole fascinating story as it unfolds.

The primary objectives of the BLOODHOUND project are:

• ‘To create a national surge in popularity of Science and Engineering’
   
• ‘To create an iconic project requiring extreme research and technology, whilst providing the means to enable the student population to share the experience and join in the adventure’

As such BLOODHOUND has the full backing of the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCFS) and the main elements of the project have been integrated into school curriculum. Being a 1K Club member provides students with additional information relevant to their work and for parents it allows them to learn at the same time and same level providing real opportunities for communication and working together.
